NAME: The Iron Bull
CANON: Dragon Age
CANON POINT: Post Trespasser
AGE: 30s (No canon age provided)
BACKGROUND: Character Wiki
Key decisions impacting Bull's personality:
- Romanced by Inquisitor but relationship broken off instead of being given dragon tooth
- Chargers saved meaning he's no longer part of the Qun
PERSONALITY: When you're first getting to meet The Iron Bull, you're introduced to an easy going guy who knows how to kick back but who also is ready and willing to jump into a fight whenever it comes his way. He doesn't back away from the chaos of battle just like he doesn't back away from the chance to have a drink with someone or a good lay. Yet, it's easy to miss that there's more to him than this. A depth that he tends to be honest about but that you might not recognize all the same since not everyone can be so honest about who they are as people.
From an early age Bull was raised to be a spy. To be that which you want on your side because it means he can get closer to you. And not only that but he's damn good at this. More than once he has observations about things going on around him that others might not notice and so on simply because he's been trained to see that which others might not. To read people so that every action they do has some kind of meaning for him to read like the person is an open book. Very little slips past his notice to the point where it can seem like he almost has eyes literally everywhere to notice every since thing going on around him. Something you likely want on your side since it means he's aware of what your weaknesses are as well.
When the Inquisitor meets him, he's open about who and what he is. As he puts it later, it's actually easier to worm his way into the trust of others simply by being open about what he is. To be the unexpected from his role. It's actually surprising how many are more likely to overlook a spy when he's been open about the fact, when he's literally told you exactly why he's there to begin with. These days he may no longer be tied to the Qun but he still uses these abilities for the Inquisition and regularly offers what he sees to the Inquisitor when prompted.
However, this honest and easy going attitude doesn't mean he's without his own prejudices. For example, he often comments on his mistrust of the “Vints” and how they handle treatment of others as well as how they handle magic. He even has been shown to be unsure about free range of magic users without some kind of balance to help keep them in check. These prejudices come strongly from his Qunari background where following the Qun meant having control and everyone knowing their place. To be without this makes him uneasy because chaos is something that should be stopped. A fact we see best when he talks about dragons. He admires these creatures thoroughly but also believes they are the embodiment of chaos and destruction. Letting them roam free just means that you are letting chaos run free. Freedom is one thing but it needs to be balanced by control.
Another sign of this is how Bull feels about the Tal-Vashoth. These are people who have run from the Qun and often become violent and out of control. He's watched these people run through and destroy so much that is good and innocent in the world. More than once he's been the one who has had to hunt these people down. One of the things he hates the most is that he's become one by deciding to save his Chargers rather than sacrificing them for the Qun. Most often he tends to compartmentalize these feelings so that way they don't get in the way and so others don't spot his weaknesses but this often weighs heavily on him. After all, that choice was not an easy one to make. His entire life has been about the Qun but the Chargers have been a family that he's created. To pick between his two lives and to know that no matter what he's losing the other entirely killed him.
If you talk to Bull about a lot of his personal feelings about things like this, he'll talk to you sure. However he will keep you and himself at a distance from these feelings. They're there but they get in the way of what he needs to do. Much like when the Inquisitor showed him that he wasn't interested in taking a relationship with him seriously. At that point he just packs away those feelings because he needs to continue to be the support his friend needs. He doesn't let his personal feelings get in the way of what needs to be done. If getting closer to him causes stress then he's willing to, essentially, friendzone himself.
After all, personal comfort is another matter of control. Control over your own desires and wishes. He may be able to tell what someone needs but he never pushes beyond that. One of the best examples of this involves his previous sexual relationship with the Inquisitor. He set boundaries and made sure that he was always ready to pull away if he needed to but otherwise pushed and pushed. As Cole observes at one point, Bull seems like he has the power to break his lover but it is the Inquisitor who has all of the power and Bull is just servicing his needs.
That is what Bull is there for. To fill a need. Either as a spy or a friend or a boss or a lover. He's open and ready to be there for you, especially if he happens to like you enough to feel loyalty. For example, the Chargers and the Inquisitor mean the world to him. He may not be lovers with the latter any longer but he still is there for him through everything. You will never find a better companion than the one that you fine in The Iron Bull. And yes...he did see you do that thing there.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Bull is a Warrior who specializes in being a Reaver. This means that he is a powerhouse in the battlefield who gets stronger the more he's hurt. Blood and pain and death is his motivation and makes him just the kind of person that you want to have on the frontline since he can tank his way through basically everything. And being one who specializes in two handed weapons as well means that he's very strong as well.
Now, he has no real magic or supernatural abilities to speak of. With that said, he's a trained mercenary and spy meaning that his observational skills are off the charts and he's amazing at being able to find out just what someone needs. This includes molding himself to fill that role. Essentially Bull is a dangerous fighter that you want to have on your side rather than against you.
