Where I come from magic is usually viewed in one of a few ways. Those who want freedom to do anything they want with it. Those who understand that it's a chaotic force that needs a measure of control. Those who fear it because of what people can do with it.
In the Qunari you'll see those who are able to practice magic are dangerous and unable to master this magic themselves. They are entrusted to a keeper of sorts. They are forbidden to practice this magic without the order of their keeper. It's considered an immense honor to sacrifice free will in order to maintain control over themselves like this. The Qunari honor them and the virtue is strong. But still their magic is powerful and can overwhelm if they are not controlled.
In other parts of the world there were places called Circles. These were places where mages could go or be brought to and people called the Templar would watch over them. A balance. Because magic can make it easier for demons to invade and destroy using a mage, the Templar could be there for the safety of them and others. Some of these towers fell when control was lost though.
Where Dorian is from, Tevinter, magic is considered a birthright. The stronger your magic in your family is, the more power your family has. Mages rule over the country and they've a history of magical experiments and so on. Especially on their slaves. Fenris, one of my lovers and the guy who lives on my floor, was one of their slaves. He has a special hatred of Vints I can't blame him for. I'm not partial to them either. Don't really hide that fact.
The thing about magic is that when it's left uncontrolled it can do all kinds of things. Create monsters, curse lands, raise the dead, summon demons, freeze people in place, silence them... It has it's uses for good too, I won't deny that. Damn good to have a mage on your side in combat. And I've seen some amazing healing done by mages.
So when Dorian rushed in and used that magic to aid Huaisang by freezing a defenseless woman and silencing her? Yeah, I was pissed about the influence Huaisang had had on him already.
It's why I told Dorian and why I've also told Fenris. Not only are they both my Subs and I live with them but I also love them. They have a right to know what I've seen after that incident.
I suppose it's advice I don't have to give, but I wouldn't feel right not to say something. From what I understand, this is the first time Dorian has slipped like this? It's something to keep an eye on to be sure, but I think it wise to let some of this slide, to an extent.
I fear the more you push at Dorian the more he might run into Huaisang's arms. It's enough to plant seeds of doubts and let them bloom naturally.
[It's certainly how Meng Yao would do things, anyhow. Bull seems a lot more straight-forward than that.]

Put that way, I can understand more now why you'd be upset with what happened. Dorian slipped, so to speak.
As I said, I don't think your worries are unfounded. But may I offer some advice for approaching this?

They're good men. It's the least I can do for them.

You're a good man as well, The Iron Bull.
